Nintendo blocks another 2,200 videos on YouTube with its music
As it turns out, the events of the past week were just the beginning – with YouTube video game music channel GilvaSunner announcing that they’ve now been hit with another 2,200 copyright blocks from Nintendo.
The same channel has had a target on its back for some time now, and the latest update follows 1,300 takedowns. In a series of posts on Twitter, the channel’s creator said he was ready to call it a day and would take down the channel, or at least “what’s left of it” this Friday. Other copyright blocks should also follow:
After much thought about this over the past few days, I’ve decided that at this point it really isn’t worth maintaining the channel any longer, and so I’ll be deleting the GilvaSunner YouTube channel (or whatever it is rest) to come Friday.
There are a lot of different opinions on what’s going on and that’s great! I can understand just about every side. I know this is disappointing to read for many of you, but I hope you can respect my decision to want to move on at this point.
I want to thank you for the 11+ years of support (or more if you followed me before this account) and the many kind messages you shared with me. It was really amazing to see the VGM scene grow so much! Thank you for continuing to support composers and the community!
The same channel was originally the target of copyright claims from Nintendo in 2020, so it’s not the first time something like this has happened. Here is a post shared by the GilvaSunner around the same time – explaining how they never monetized the videos:
I see a lot of assumptions made by some of you with extreme words against me. Let me clarify again that I do not monetize the videos and do not profit from them. I realize that this does not justify downloading the content.
I’m not mad or surprised that Nintendo is doing this either, but I think it’s a little disappointing that there isn’t much of an alternative. If Nintendo thinks that’s the right thing to do (to set an example), I’ll let them delete the channel. It is their content after all.
The songs removed from this YouTube channel are from Nintendo series like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Super Smash. Brothers, Kirby, Child Icarus, Mother/Earthbound and Luigi’s mansion.
If we hear anything else, we’ll provide an update.
