Self-proclaimed “YouTube artist” J Balvin joins the platform on documentary series

Amid the launch of its redesign youtube music service, the video giant continues to promote emerging artists with its Featured Artist Story anthology series.

The most recent episode of the series, which focuses on emerging artists who have left a unique mark on YouTube, is titled Redefining the mainstreamand features the Colombian singer J Balvin. To celebrate its release on Wednesday evening, Balvin appeared at New York YouTube Space for a live Q&A alongside a renowned streetwear influencer Premium Vandal. the Andy Hines-has made short films about Balvin’s humble beginnings to his rise as one of the world’s top reggaeton stars – as well as the role YouTube has played in his success.

“I’m a YouTube artist – that’s how I started going to different places,” Balvin explains. Early in his career, he explains, “I didn’t have a label — everything was independent — so YouTube helped me a lot. My first gig outside of my country was in Romania, and that was thanks to to YouTube.

Balvin has been on top of the new YouTube Table of the best artists worldwide in the past four weeks, and is one of eight artists to have released four videos that have surpassed one billion views. The video of “Mi Gente“, for example, is the fourth fastest video in YouTube history to reach the milestone.
