Government blocks 45 YouTube videos from 10 YouTube channels: reasons they were blocked and more

The government ordered YouTube to block 45 YouTube videos from 10 YouTube channels. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued orders to block the affected videos late last week (September 23) under the provisions of information technology (intermediary guidelines and Digital Media Code of Ethics) Rules 2021. Blocked videos had a cumulative audience of over 1 crore 30 lakh views. According to the government, the content blocked by the ministry has been deemed detrimental to India’s sovereignty and integrity, state security, India’s friendly relations with foreign states and the public order in the country. Accordingly, the content was covered by Section 69A of the Information Technology Act 2000. Here are the main reasons why the videos were banned

* Showed fake news and transformed videos disseminated with the aim of spreading hatred among religious communities
The content of these 45 videos included fake news and tweaked videos disseminated with the aim of spreading hatred among religious communities. Examples include false claims such as the government stripping religious rights from certain communities, violent threats against religious communities, declaration of civil war in India, etc. the country.
* Disseminate misinformation about problems with the Agnipath scheme, Indian Armed Forcesnational security
Some of the videos blocked by the ministry were used to spread misinformation on issues related to Agnipath program, Indian armed forces, Indian national security apparatus, Kashmir, etc. The content was found to be false and sensitive from the perspective of India’s National Security and Friendly Relations with Foreign States.
* Parts shown from J&K and Ladakh outside Indian territory
Some videos portrayed India’s mistaken external border with parts of J&K and Ladakh outside Indian territory. Such misrepresentation of maps has proven to be detrimental to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India.
What are these YouTube channels
The government has not disclosed the names of these YouTube channels. On August 1, the government blocked eight YouTube channels. These blocked Indian YouTube channels have been observed to use fake and sensational thumbnails, images of news anchors and logos of some TV news channels to mislead viewers into believing that the news is genuine. With this action, since December 2021, the ministry has issued instructions for the blocking of 102 YouTube channels and several other social media accounts.
