“The purpose of the content posted by some of these YouTube channels was to spread hatred among religious communities in India. False claims were made in various videos from blocked YouTube channels,” the ministry said.
“Fake news, sensational vignettes”
Examples of this include fake news such as the Indian government for ordering the demolition of religious structures; The Indian government has banned the celebration of religious festivals, the declaration of religious war in India, etc. Such content has proven to have the potential to create community discord and disrupt public order in the country.
Moreover, the blocked channels were also used to post fake news on topics like Indian Armed Forces, Jammu and Kashmir, etc. The content was found to be completely false and sensitive from the perspective of national security and India’s friendly relations with foreign states, the ministry noted.
Furthermore, blocked Indian YouTube channels have been observed to use fake and sensational thumbnails, images of news anchors and logos of some TV news channels to mislead viewers into believing that the news is authentic.
All of the blocked channels were broadcasting advertisements with false content harmful to community harmony, public order and India’s external relations.
With the latest action, the ministry issued instructions for the blocking of 102 YouTube-based news channels and several other social media accounts since December 2021.
